The Willunga Farmers Market has been recognised as the nation’s best at the delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards.

The Saturday morning staple for thousands of people on the Fleurieu Peninsula secured the Outstanding Farmers’ Market trophy at the awards – the second time it has won the honour.

The market’s general manager, Jenni Mitton, said it was a tribute to the hard work of farmers markets across Australia, which had battled to stay open during the pandemic.

“We’re obviously very proud to win ourselves but the resilience of farmers markets in South Australia and all over Australia over the past 18 months has been amazing,” she said.

“We’ve worked really hard to be able to pivot and change our business slightly … the global pandemic wasn’t going to stop us from delivering fresh produce to customers.”

Adelaide’s Seven Seasons Distillery, founded by former AFL player Daniel Motlop, was another major winner.

The brand, which uses indigenous Australian ingredients, won the In The Bottle category for “innovative and distinctive” small-batch and handcrafted spirits, beers and ciders.

The Barossa Valley Cheese Company’s Aged La Dame product won the From The Dairy trophy.

Now based at Willunga High School, the Willunga Farmers Market spreads stalls across two locations to reduce density.

“But the local produce, that’s the hero at the end of the day,” Ms Mitton said.

“It’s still fresh a week later in their fridge and our customers can taste the difference – whether it’s eggs or chicken or apples.

“It’s fantastic to have access to that produce in our backyard, and you’re really buying local and supporting local growers.”

The full list of winners will be in the September issue of delicious., on sale from Thursday.
