So cool: Ice Cream Festival returns, plus our top spots for ice cream in SA

This steamy weather calls for two things: ice cream and the beach! Head to Glenelg this afternoon for a lickin’ good time – or see our list of the top 10 ice cream spots in the city.

What does it take to make the world's best gelato?

A cool festival will give South Australians a chance to beat the heat this weekend.

With temperatures tipped to reach the high thirties, thousands of people are expected to attend the Glenelg Ice Cream Festival, which will run for one day only on Saturday January 14.

Now in its second year, the festival is expected to draw crowds to Jetty Rd, Glenelg, with a street party and dedicated ice cream zone.

Holdfast Bay mayor Amanda Wilson said last year’s festival attracted almost 30,000 people.

“It is the perfect excuse to head out on a summer’s evening with friends and family, enjoy the food and drinks that are on offer, and of course, indulge in a delicious ice cream,” she said.

Pals Hunter and Harley, both 10, were among those planning to attend.

“We absolutely love ice cream, especially in summer, so we can’t wait to go down to Glenelg and hang out by the beach this weekend and have lots of yummy treats,” Hunter said.

The street party will also include kids activities, fashion parades and live entertainment.

The festival will run from 4pm to 11pm.

Meanwhile, those unable to attend the event are still spoiled for choice when it comes to indulging in a cold sweet treat.

Here’s our top 10 picks for a sugary scoop. Has your favourite place made the list?

48 Flavours

Among them is SA owned 48 Flavours, which recently opened its fifth store seaside at Henley Beach.

The family owned and operated business has boomed in the last few years, opening their first store in 2014.

“Henley Beach continues to grow and develop, and we can’t wait to be part of the buzzing atmosphere that surrounds Henley Square.”

Hyde Park boy, Kobi Koo, 3, visited the new store with sisters Imani Koo, 13, and Miley Koo, 10 and cousins Nikita Koo, 12 and Angela Paasuke, 12.

“I love roche rock because it has little chocolate pieces and it’s like finding a crunchy surprise in your mouth,” Miley said.

The growing SA chain is known for its dynamic range of flavours including taro and coconut, durian, Sicilian pistachio, strawberry and basil, Turkish delight and whiskey business.

“New flavours are often inspired by our local partnerships within SA and the fresh local produce that we are so proud to have at our disposal,” founder Brian O’Donnell said.

“It’s all about developing flavours that make each ingredient shine, showcasing the best South Australia has to offer.”
