The Adelaide Festival Centre’s new concept restaurant will pay homage to late South Australian poet Max Harris and his groundbreaking 1940s literary movement.

The Angry Penguin, which takes its name from Harris’s avante garde journal, will open in February next year, with top Adelaide chef Alex Katsman at the helm.

Overlooking the River Torrens, the new restaurant replaces the previous Star Bar and Bistro and is part of an extensive $35m redevelopment project at the Festival Centre.

Festival Centre chief executive Kate Gould said the venue will celebrate the “creative legacy” of Harris and heralds an exciting new era of dining at the centre.

“We hope that Angry Penguin will become a special dining destination for all to experience,” she said.

Katsman, previously head chef at the Sofitel Adelaide and Adelaide Marriott, said he was thrilled to be joining such an iconic city destination.

“Work is currently underway building an exciting new menu that will bring Angry Penguin to life,” he said.

The Angry Penguin will feature a 1970s-inspired interior with indoor and outdoor seating options, and will be open for lunch and dinner.

The venue honours the rebellious literary movement spearheaded by Harris, creator and editor of Angry Penguins magazine.

In collaboration with luminaries including Joy Hester, John and Sunday Reed, Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan, they shaped a modernist art movement which changed the nation’s artistic landscape.
