Former MasterChef star and restaurateur Andre Ursini has launched his latest project, a regional eatery located on a picturesque 40-acre property in Hindmarsh Valley.
Co-founded with talented SA chef Will Doak, the new business, Lost Phoenix Farm, is aimed at local tourists looking to enjoy a day trip or a weekend away.
Doak, 28, has previously worked in the kitchens of acclaimed Adelaide restaurants including Press* Food & Wine, Fugazzi Bar & Dining Room and Ursini’s own Orso. He said there was an obvious “gap in the market”, especially on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula.
“McLaren Vale is such a hotspot at the moment and we’re literally 20 minutes down the road,” he said.
“There’s some amazing views, there’s some of SA’s best beaches around it and we just wanted to provide a nice, laidback, easygoing bistro and restaurant in the area.”
It’s Doak’s first restaurant and Ursini’s third project, joining Orso and Willmott’s Gastronomia in Rose Park, and Villetta Porcini in Mylor.
“It’s very exciting to have this opportunity. Andre and I get along very, very well. There’s a level of trust between us and he allows me to spread my wings, as you would say,” Doak said.
Open Thursday to Sunday for lunch, Lost Phoenix will feature a casual dining experience similar to the menus at Press or Orso but with “about 30 or 40 per cent less fuss”.
“We’re not trying to make food the reason why people go up there but we want it to work among everything else. It’s just enjoyable food with a nice, relaxed vibe,” Doak said.
