A popular city cafe and wine bar owned by a former Home and Away actor has closed its doors.
Community Cafe and Bar, at Lot Fourteen on North Terrace, shut down this week, three years after it was launched by Brett Hicks-Maitland.
Mr Hicks-Maitland, who played Dylan Russell on the Seven soapie for three years, said it was a “terribly sad day” for himself.
“The team and I have worked so hard to create a welcoming and inclusive venue – it’s why we called it Community – but we’ve had to close our doors,” he said.
“I have built wonderful relationships with amazing people over the last three years and will miss all of them.”
Mr Hicks-Maitland’s company, Renewable Investments SA, was placed into voluntary liquidation on Wednesday, with Oliver Sheahan, from Sheahan Lock Partners, appointed as liquidator.
Mr Sheahan said he’s “trading the business on for a limited period” while he explores options to sell it.
Community, located in the restored Sheridan kiosk, was the first cafe contracted for the precinct back in 2020.
The Sheridan building, constructed in 1925, features four pairs of steel-framed French doors to enable alfresco dining.
Community offered a flexible all-day breakfast and lunch menu, plus coffee, wine and cocktails. It also hosted various functions ranging from birthdays to weddings.
Along with Home and Away, Mr Hicks-Maitland appeared in guest roles on Australian TV series such as Packed to the Rafters and All Saints, and starred alongside Tilda Cobham-Hervey in the State Theatre Company SA’s production, The Dictionary of Lost Words.
He’s also worked in and managed bars and restaurants in Sydney, Los Angeles, and Adelaide.
Community’s closure comes amid a string of other establishments ceasing business for similar reasons including southern suburbs cafe My Little Foodery, the North Adelaide Burger Bar, Parkside burger joint Gang Gang and Norwood Italian Restaurant, Martini on the Parade, just to name a few.
