Tucking into a delicious jam and cream scone from the CWA Country Cafe is one of the Adelaide Royal Show’s longest-running traditions - and now it’s found a new market.
While the beloved event might have been cancelled this year, devotees can still enjoy the tasty baked treats at the Adelaide Central Market.
For the first time, the SA Country Women’s Association will be selling its famous scones at a pop-up stall in the market’s Community Kitchen from Saturday until September 11.
SACWA state president Davina Quirke admitted the group had been “devastated” when the show was axed for the second straight year, due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.
“But we are so grateful to the Central Market for allowing us to continue our tradition by offering us a space to reach a new audience of scone lovers,” she said.
The CWA, which has been at the show for over 70 years, will be serving up takeaway scones and jars of jam, along with special showbags containing scone mix, jam and a tea towel.
For the more adventurous, there’s a new product: fruit scones featuring sultanas, donated by Foodland.
“Our scones are so popular because we’ve created a lovely, community atmosphere for people to enjoy one of everyone’s favourite comfort foods,” Ms Quirke said.
“The quality of our scones is always consistent so people really look forward to them as well as our range of jams each year.”
Patrons can also celebrate “show day” at the market on Saturday with free kids entertainment, fairy floss and live music.
Another show favourite, Adelaide’s Famous Poffertjes, will be making its popular mini pancakes at the Market’s Producer in Residence pop-up stall.
