Shoppers are in a frenzy over a Kmart jacket they say is a perfect replica of one from a luxury French fashion house.

The budget retailer, often lauded over its “dupes” of high-end products, has this time found favour with customers thanks to its $40 Bouclé Jacket.

In a post shared with its 105,000 followers, Instagram page ‘Kmart Insider’ compared the piece to Celine’s Chasseur Jacket, which is a whopping 140 times the price at $5600.

“While Chanel may have pioneered the bouclé jacket, @kmartaus’s $40 version allows all of us to enjoy timeless style,” the post read, alongside a photo of the two coats side-by-side.

“It’s the most perfect dupe of Celine’s Chasseur Jacket that retails for $5600.”

Those in the comments went so far as to declare the Kmart version was nicer than the original.

“I like the Kmart version more,” one wrote.

“Running not walking to get this NOW,” a third said.

Someone else pointed out that there were “lots of similar” bouclé jackets “at op shops too if you can’t get one at Kmart”.

As consumers look to combat the cost of living with cheaper alternatives to everything from cosmetic products and clothing to appliances and home decor, social media experts have advised high-end brands to “lean in” and embrace duplicate subculture.

“Brands don’t need to worry about their reputation being damaged” by imitators, client director at influencer marketing firm the Goat Agency, Sophie Hardie, told The Guardian earlier this year.

“Instead of fighting dupes, high-end brands should use the dupe to lightheartedly engage with popular culture,” she added, particularly when one goes viral on a platform like TikTok.

“They should engage with it directly – and authentically – to bring new people in and show a confidence in the power of their brand.”
