Identical twins are a valuable commodity in fashion industry

The fashion industry is on the lookout for twins. Following the success of Sydney-born clothes horses Zac and Jordan Stenmark, agencies and brands are favouring models with not only the same surname but identical looks.

Twins are having a major fashion moment.

Following the success of Sydney-born clotheshorses Zac and Jordan Stenmark, agencies and brands are favouring models with not only the same surname but identical looks.

Sending siblings like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Erika and Joan Smalls down the runway is old news and identical twins have instead become a valuable commodity.

Almost all Sydney’s major modelling agencies currently have twins on their books, with genetically blessed siblings de rigueur.

“It has gone beyond model siblings, model twins are a hot commodity in the world of fashion right now because they bring a point of difference,” Chic Modelling Management’s Kathy Ward said.

“Brands love to be seen to be one step ahead doing things differently and who isn’t intrigued by twins.”

Chadwicks models Gabrielle and Katya Gesku have found fame in the fashion industry, times two.

However according to the agencies founder Martin Walsh, working with identical siblings isn’t as easy as you’d think.

“Having twins on your books can be difficult,” Walsh said.

“It’s interesting from an agent’s point of view because sometimes a client will only like one of the models and not the other, despite them looking the same. Which is challenging because you need to approach their careers in a very specific way.

“Even though they will often work together - the girls just did a Lover campaign - you need to promote them both separately and as a package. So I does take a certain skill set to look after twins.”

Walsh said while twins start out working as a pair, they often take different career paths and are also popular as a solo act.

“Gabrielle and Katya look very similar, but Gabrielle has a gap in her tooth.

“Gabrielle is doing a lot of editorial and Katya is doing more commercial work..

“We have had many twins over the years, but often they end up doing quite different types of work.”

Sydney based identical beauties, Tawny and Saskia Myers have been modelling as twins since they were four-years-old and were scouted by leading agency Priscilla’s at the age of 13.

They realised the benefit of being a model twin early in the game.

“When we were little, Tawny was hired for a newspaper ad but she fell off a seat and had a fat lip,” 16-year-old Saskia said.

“So I had to step in and act like Tawny and pretend I was Tawny doing her shoot.

“We think this might happen again in coming years.”

Their agent Doll Wright said while her clients might look identical, she anticipates their careers will be anything but.

“I don’t think Saskia and Tawny will have the same careers because While they look identical their personalities are different and they are absolutely their own people,” Wright said.

“And in this day and age clients are so intrigued by a models personality. They are not just a mannequin anymore.

“While Saskia and Tawny are best of friends, they will absolutely go down different paths.”
