‘Extra bit of cash’: Cleaners cashing in at the Royal Adelaide Show this year

The Royal Adelaide Show kicks off next week – and there are still jobs on offer for up to $50 an hour. Here’s how one 19-year-old is set to earn $250/day and how you can apply.

Jasper Thomas, 19, will swap the books for the bog during September after signing up as a cleaner for the Royal Adelaide Show.

The first-year university student was looking for a casual job when he came across cleaning roles at the Royal Adelaide Show on Seek with an hourly rate between $30 and $50 an hour.

Jobs on offer were cleaners, bin runners, casual food and beverage attendants, labourers, junior showbag sales and general hands working in different livestock pavilions.

Mr Thomas said he snagged a job with Australian Green Clean, which advertised overnight weekend cleaning rates at $50 an hour, and was getting a base rate of $30 an hour.

The role will involve cleaning of bathrooms facilities, wiping tables and hard surfaces, emptying bins, picking up rubbish, vacuuming and mopping and window cleaning.

“The pay looked pretty good and it didn’t seem too taxing, so it seemed like a pretty good job to apply for,” Mr Thomas said.

“I like it, I don’t have to work that much so it’s just an extra bit of cash.”

Mr Thomas said he’d be working six out of 10 of the show days, with one Sunday at the higher hourly rate set to take his earnings to about $1500, or an average of $250 a day.

Graduating from St Peter’s College last year, he had previously only worked in one other job at a cafe being a waiter and washing dishes.

“At the moment I’m there preparing the show, getting the stands ready and all the buildings,” Mr Thomas said.

“Then when the show’s on I’ll be doing general cleaning.”

Mr Thomas is studying computer science at Adelaide University and said he hoped the opportunity with Australian Green Clean would continue after the show.

A Royal Adelaide Show spokeswoman said one contractor, Pinnacle People, had about 25 to 30 roles still available still for labourers and livestock areas while Australian Green Clean had about 30.

The Adelaide Royal Show kicks off on September 2 and runs to September 10.
