Seafood markets are preparing for fish to be a popular dish this Easter with a late surge for popular varieties expected for the long weekend.

Foodland Pasadena seafood manager Gus Logue said King George Whiting, garfish and Atlantic salmon are expected to be among the big sellers this Easter.

Oysters and prawns are also tipped to be a hit.

“Traditionally, (Good Friday) a big seafood day,” Mr Logue said.

“We’ve prepared enough stock to cater for everyone’s tastes and budget.”

But a cost-of-living pinch has seen less interest so far as the long weekend nears.

“It’s been the most relaxed since Covid and you’d think that would help sales but with everything going up people must want to save,” he said.

But there is still time for interest to peak with specials being rolled out throughout the week.

“We have a really good special on prawns and fresh fish – people want to buy as close as possible (to Easter),” Mr Logue said.

King George Whiting will be selling for $75-$99/kg, garfish for $49-$59/kg and around $45/kg for Atlantic salmon.

SA prawns and oysters proved popular last Easter for those wanting to buy early and save, with 2.8 tonnes of king prawns and 600 dozen oysters bought from the Angelakis Bros Central Market store.

Wednesday and Thursday are tipped as the best days to buy seafood fresh before Easter, with buyers advised to get in early to make the most of Easter specials.

Coorong mullet and snapper fillets are a classic Good Friday favourite with prices starting from $55 and $54 per kilo respectively.

SA rock lobster prices are still holding steady from Christmas with premium grade cooked rock lobsters starting at $68.99/kg.
