The growing number of Chinese students moving to Adelaide is among the reasons why Tong Guo decided to open his latest restaurant and bar in Chinatown.

Mr Guo, a prominent Adelaide businessman who is also a co-owner of Mi Yoghurt, Hitea and seven Kintaro Sushi outlets, has opened Chao Chow on Gouger St.

“The idea came about because Chinatown lacks something a bit hipster, but funky and trendy,” Mr Guo, 31, of Lightsview, says.

“Our concept is to follow the latest food trends in China, bringing over the food culture to Australia … given the Chinese student population in (Adelaide) is ever growing.

“Those Chinese students miss home, so this pays homage to those who miss home.”

Mr Guo spent about $800,000 fitting out Chao Chow, a hotpot restaurant where the customer chooses their own ingredients, with the price of the meal calculated by its weight.

Most of the restaurant’s produce is locally bought at the Adelaide Produce Market at Pooraka, while more traditional Asian ingredients are imported from China and Vietnam.

Mr Guo says Chinatown needs more trendy places which open late and have outdoor dining, to keep progressing.

He plans on introducing barbecues and hopes to be able to trade until 2am on some nights.

The restaurant was the former home of dessert bar San Churro.
