When it comes to scones, they’re the cream of the crop.
And the return of the Royal Adelaide Show means that the South Australia Country Women’s Association’s freshly baked scones are back at the Adelaide Showgrounds.
SACWA deputy state president Sharyn Muller expects after a two-year hiatus, the association’s Country Cafe – at the end of the food court – is going to be inundated.
“After expenses we can make anywhere up to probably $60,000 or $70,000 in profit, in a very good year,” Ms Muller says.
“We’re thinking that this year is going to be a good year.
“We needed to be prepared because normally the line for the CWA Country Cafe is out the door.
“It’s a really good way for us to showcase the skills that we have and the talents that we share with each other and how we can work together so well as a team.”
The SACWA, which has been a regular at the show for 70 years, bakes up to 1400 scones a day – or 18,000 over the length of the show – using the association’s special recipe.
After two years of cancellations for Covid, Ms Muller is feeling daunted about returning to the cafe.
“We’re all two years older and we’re wondering how it’s all going to go,” she says.
“Once we started pre-show, because our Country Café was open two weeks prior to the show actually starting, it was very refreshing to be back.
“(Covid) has been tough. We did have to completely close down all areas of the association apart from our office.
“We have certainly missed a lot of the friendships that many women experience as being a member of the association, during the lockdown period.”
The SACWA relies on the show as its major fundraiser, which will support vulnerable women and children across the state.
“We work at state level to do that through our emergency aid fund and through the Dorothy Dolling Memorial Trust fund, to provide grants to rural students every year to continue their studies,” Ms Muller says.
The country women know how to make the perfect scone.
Their now not-so-secret recipe is a mixture produced by Laucke Flour Mills called Country Women’s Scone Specialty Mix. It can be purchased at the show, participating stores across SA and online.
The Country Cafe is open daily from 8am with the CWA marquee open from 10am.
