City cycling and cafe hub Ride Contour moving to Henley Beach later this year, last day March 30

A business set up in a prominent Hutt St property will close its doors at the end of the month, but plans to reopen in a seaside location.

18-year-old cafe owner finally sees success after slow start

A cycling hub and cafe in the city will close its doors at the end of this month and relocate to Henley Beach.

Penny Hospitality managing director Hugo Pedler said the current lease for Ride Contour, located in the former Caltex service station on Hutt St, had ended, with a new home secured for the business close to Henley’s foreshore.

He said they would make an announcement on the new location in the middle of the year.

“Sadly, our time on Hutt Street has come to an end. Without security over a long-term lease, we are unable to continue to invest capital and build our business on Hutt Street,” Mr Pedler said in a letter to stakeholders.

“This is not the end of Ride Contour, with an exciting new opportunity coming around the corner.”

The Penny Hospitality venue offers an on-site bicycle mechanic, retail shop, cafe, fitness centre and outdoor seating in a space that fits up to 1000 people.

Mr Pedler said foot traffic on Hutt St was “certainly not helpful” but the outdoor site was ideal during the Tour Down Under.

“But there are more riders down by the beach, so we are excited to expand our business there. We are more excited about the opportunity in a slightly smaller, better suited space than on Hutt St anyway,” he said.

Mr Pedler said they are organising an “end-of-Hutt St party” soon, with their final day of trading in the city on March 30.

Last month, Penny Hospitality announced it was restructuring after a challenging year for the local industry.

Despite the closure of its venues Super Bueno and Super California, Mr Pedler said the group’s other businesses including the General Havelock Hotel, Paper Tiger bar and West Oak Hotel were trading well.

“There’s been a lot of talk around town since we closed Super Bueno – ‘Penny’s closing, everything’s closing’ – that’s definitely not the case,” he said last month.

Mr Pedler revealed a new restaurant is planned for the General Havelock and a new seaside kiosk is due to open in the middle of this year.
