It started with a TAFE course and beauty school in Adelaide after leaving school at 16, but now this mum-of-four and Ceduna local has been crowned the best nail technician in South Australia for 2024.
Brooke Carey, 30, had been working out of her home in Adelaide providing nail services for close to 10 years under the name Brooke’s Nails.
“I started my business when I had my first son, and I’ve continued working and having children … so I’ve just worked and raised children,” Ms Carey said.
But 12 months ago, she moved back to her home town of Ceduna with her husband Nathan and three sons and daughter, opening her own nail studio and cementing herself in the community.
“It’s been great, it’s been so welcoming and people are so nice in the country, it’s so different,” Ms Carey said.
“I could work two times over … I guess these people in a small country town that are very secluded, they’re all about beauty and getting things done.”
Ms Carey has been nominated for the Best Nail Technician award in previous years, but said this year she feels like she has “earned” the praise.
“I feel like I have definitely put in a lot more effort being in a salon rather than home-based, so I definitely feel like I’ve deserved it,” she said.
“I feel so young still and still starting my career, I’m still raising the kids and the youngest is still only a year old … I guess I can’t put my all into it just yet.”
Ms Carey said she was excited to keep working and develop with her business.
