Aussies threaten to cancel as Disney+ warns of a hefty price increase

The news comes following an announcement from Netflix last week saying that they'd be hiking up the price of its ad-free option. When will it end!

Following last week’s news that Netflix has increased its prices for ad-free streaming, it seems other similar services are following suit.

One Aussie mum has taken to Facebook sharing an email from Disney+ with news of a hefty price increase, and needless to say, people are fuming.

“We wanted to let you know…”

An Aussie mum has taken to the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook with a screenshot of an email from Disney+.

“We wanted to let you know of an upcoming price change to your Disney+ subscription,” the email read.

“Effective on 27 March 2025, your subscription will now be called the Disney+ Premium plan and will change in price to $209.99 per year. Your payment method on file will be charged unless you cancel your subscription before 27 March 2025.”

Of course, she wasn’t happy with the development.

“Hi All, Last night [an email] came through advising that my Disney+ premium is going up to $209.99 when I paid $139.99 last year, so a big hike for me,” she said in the post.

“I double checked with Disney direct and they confirmed that effective 26 March their premiums are going up so Standard will be $159.99pa and Premium will be $209.99pa.

“Just thought I'd share for those who haven't received the email yet.”

“That’s insane!”

Commenters on the post were understandably irritated by the price hike.

“Insane, I thought the $99 annual was a lot when we first got it,” said one commenter.

“When i first subscribed to Disney it was $89 a year.... this is crazy,” another agreed.

Some said they’d be cancelling because of it - or that they had already.

“Yeah that will be a cancel come next renewal… that’s ridiculous,” one person said.

“Jesus I cancelled after the last price hike that's insane,” said another.

Is it worth it for more content?

Some commenters suggested that the price increase may be due to the announcement just days ago that ESPN sports programming would be coming to Disney+ in Australia and New Zealand in the coming months, included for all standard and premium subscribers.

In this case, for many, it could make the price worthwhile.

“That's still only $17.50 per month...which is on par with most streaming services...and they have 2000% more content,” said one commenter.

“I imagine that has a lot to do with ESPN coming on board as well,” another suggested.

However, not everyone agrees.

“I already cancelled mine. I wasn't interested in the ‘additions’ used to bump the price up. I love Disney stuff, that's why I signed up, not for anything else,” said one frustrated commenter.

“Yeah it’s a rip cause espn is going on there don’t think I’m going to renew,” said another.

“It just makes it an easy decision which subscription gets the boot,” a third person said.

“What if I don’t even want ESPN ???” said another commenter.
