An Adelaide mother of two has snatched up a once in-a-lifetime opportunity to join international icon Snoop Dogg on stage – alongside her two best friends and fellow South Australian pole dancers.
The three local dancers beat “hundreds” of others who auditioned to perform with the world-famous hip-hop artist at his Adelaide show.
Snoop Dogg’s “I Wanna Thank Me” tour is set to hit the stage in Adelaide on Wednesday, March 8, at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
Flagstaff Hill mother of twins, Charlie Hunter, 41, who owns The Pole Boutique on Anzac Hwy, said she is “overwhelmed with adrenaline and excitement” since learning she would be performing with an artist she grew up listening to.
Ms Hunter has been a dancer for 17 years and has gained a large network of national and international connections from the pole dancing industry.
Ms Hunter, who is also orchestrating an upcoming Fringe show, submitted a video of her freestyle dancing to one of Snoop Dogg’s songs, plus two other performances that “show your style, swag and energy” as per the audition requirements, and links to her social media.
Ms Hunter recalls how she felt when she found out that she had landed the gig.
“It was a surreal feeling because I didn’t expect to be on stage with such a big iconic hip hop artist,” she said.
She believes her almost two decades of dancing experience as well as performing with other notable artists, such as DJ Paul Van Dyk, prepared her for this opportunity with “one of her favourite artists”.
On the night of the show the dancers will freestyle perform six to seven songs.
“They wanted people who are prepared and capable of handling that environment. But I am actually preparing for my Fringe show. So luckily, I’m feeling very pole fit,” Ms Hunter said.
“Being on stage with such a big crowd is such an amazing experience – and meeting Snoop obviously.
“And getting to dance on stage with two of my best friends and employees too, getting to do a show with the people you love is great.”
Ms Hunter will perform on stage next to Olivia Oates, 29, from Norwood and Rosie Walsh, 28.
Ms Oates, who also works as a photographer and dance teacher, will use 12 years of dancing experience when she hits the stage.
Ms Oates heard about the opportunity through social media, after seeing a post by one of the American pole dancers who was in charge of booking dancers for all of Snoop Dogg’s shows.
Similar to Ms Hunter’s audition process, Ms Oates chose the song P.I.M.P by 50 Cent featuring Snoop Dogg to land the ultimate role.
“I knew that my boss had been booked; I was trying to soak in the fact that I’d be dancing on stage with Snoop Dogg,” she said.
“I was trying to calm myself, (because) I don’t know what’s going to happen, so I just had to wait and see.”
Olivia recalls the nerve-wreaking moment she found out she was one of the three dancers selected.
“It was so surreal. I was at the gym with my husband and I got a message asking to do a quick video chat,” she said.
“I didn’t realise how badly I wanted it. She didn’t make it seem like she was necessarily booking me and then at the end she said ‘I’d love to book you for the show’.
“I finally got to let all the excitement and the emotions come out (instead) of trying to keep it.”
Ms Oates said this will be her first performance with an international superstar, but she’s had a taste of musical tours, having performed with Timomatic a few years ago.
She says her highlight will be meeting Snoop Dogg and performing her signature move, the spatchcock.
“I don’t know how to explain it but it’s a pretty intense flexibility move, basically you’re folded forward and wrapped around the pole,” she said.
“It looks like there’s a lot to look forward to. It’s going to be absolutely incredible.”
