‘Ridiculous’: SNL bosses break silence over Aimee Lou Wood controversy

A fresh twist in the drama between Aimee Lou Wood and SNL has emerged, sparking doubt over the White Lotus star’s claim.

Saturday Night Live bosses have broken their silence over claims the show shared a formal apology with actress Aimee Lou Wood over a joke.

The beloved late-night comedy show aired a White Lotus spoof during Saturday’s episode, using the show’s plush hotel setting for a parody of American politics, with actors playing Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. re-imagined as White Lotus characters.

But SNL cast member Sarah Sherman’s brief portrayal of Wood’s character Chelsea in the sketch had no political element: Instead, she simply exaggerated Wood’s distinctive front teeth and wide eyes.

Wood took to Instagram to lash out at the skit, calling it mean-spirited, only to later claim that SNL had “made apologies” to her.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Wood hasn’t received a formal apology from SNL because the team behind the scenes find the whole thing “ridiculous”.

“Far worse has been said about other celebrities and everyone knows that this is what SNL does,” said the insider.

“It’s comedy. It is meant to entertain.”

Another insider told the publication that the sketch was “all in good fun” and just like any other skit about a celebrity or TV show.

“No one needed her approval,” the source said.

“If Aimee Lou got an apology, it would have been from someone directly involved in the skit who contacted her to personally apologise.”

Pictures later emerged of Wood crying on the streets of London, with many assuming it was due to her feelings over the skit.

Responding to concern over her wellbeing after the worrying photos surfaced, Wood took to Instagram and told fans: “Thank you so much. Just to say, I actually wasn’t crying about anything that the papers made out I was crying about. Something completely unrelated.”

Just hours after the skit had cone viral online, Wood called the entire thing a “cheap” shot at her looks.

“Yes, take the piss for sure — that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?” she asked.

Wood insisted that she was not “thin skinned”: “I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits,” she wrote.

“I don’t mind caricature — I understand that’s what SNL is, but the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on,” she added. “At least get the accent right, seriously. I respect accuracy, even if it’s mean.”
