Block star Shaynna Blaze reveals surprise career move

She stunned Australia after appearing on the Masked Singer and now The Block judge Shaynna Blaze has another surprise in store.

The Block judge Shaynna Blaze has her eyes squarely set on releasing her own music after rediscovering her passion on The Masked Singer Australia.

Blaze was the surprise reveal as the celebrity under the Bluebottle mask on Ten’s reality singing competition on Monday night and has already begun working on writing and creating her own music, with plans of releasing singles next year and performing live around the country.

“It’s been bubbling away for the past four years especially with so much time off in Covid,” Blaze said.

“I’ve always said it’s just for me but I’ve been really ignited by the reaction and the performance and everything.

“It was such a joy to do Masked Singer and that’s reignited all that happiness that you get from doing something that you love. So yeah why not (release an album).”

Much has been made of seeing Blaze moonlighting on Ten, given that she’s one of the best-known stars on the rival Nine network.

Blaze refuted Dave Hughes claims on radio Tuesday morning that she hadn’t told anyone at Nine.

Speaking on 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin on Tuesday morning, The Masked Singer judge claimed Blaze didn’t tell anyone from the network that she’d be appearing on the rival show – which airs in the same timeslot as The Block.

But Blaze revealed that while her contract was non-exclusive to Nine, she did give the network a heads up out of “respect and loyalty”.

“I think the great thing is that when I was with Foxtel’s Lifestyle channel and also Channel 9, they’re really great in saying ‘we don’t want to hold you back from the things that you want to do, so let’s work together’,” she said.

In fact, Channel 9 was overjoyed at her performance on the show.

“We love Shaynna’s singing voice and talent and are happy she is able to share it with The Masked Singer audience,” a Nine spokesperson said.

Her hectic schedule of filming The Block in Melbourne and promoting her movie The Fort, saw Blaze fall ill just prior to starting work on The Masked Singer.
She completely lost her voice a mere two weeks before she was due to step into the gorgeous Tim Chappel-designed Blue Bottle costume.

She was gargling garlic, lemon and “all the lotions and potions” just to get her through. And Blaze had real fears she would permanently damage her vocal cords.

“The great thing about singing is it takes a different positioning to your speaking voice – I’ve learnt that from my many years of being a singer,” Blaze reveals.
Fortunately she’s since been given the all-clear.

“It’s actually more damaging the way you speak because you tend to relax more.

“But, yeah, I ended up getting microscopes down my throat just to make sure I hadn’t damaged my throat because I was doing The Block at the same time.

“You’ll actually hear, I think it’s in two weeks (on air) on The Block, you’ll hear how I literally could not speak.

“So I had no voice and that’s when I was meant to be singing as well.”

The Block has been slammed this year for its focus on the constant negativity and bullying among the cast, with fans sharing on social media that it’s becoming more difficult to watch.

Blaze said – while she and fellow judges Neale Whittaker and Darren Palmer aren’t aware of the contestants’ behaviour until the show airs – she’d rather The Block focus on the good stuff the contestants are doing on the build, rather than the behind-the-scenes drama.

“I think as humans we don’t need that kind of behaviour anymore,” she said.

“I think the more energy we give to something like that, the more drama is out of it and we give it air.

“I think we’re better to just focus on the good stuff as to what other contestants are doing rather than a couple of things behind the scenes.”

Blaze was the fourth celebrity to be revealed on The Masked Singer, after Brian Austin Green as the Crash Test Dummy, Sandra Sully as Fawn and Summer Warne as Bad Avocado.
