Summer Warne bites back at trolls after her surprise performance on the Masked Singer Australia

Summer Warne never wanted to be famous. Her late father Shane was the “celebrity”. Now she’s revealed how her dad has helped her fight back against public criticism.

Summer Warne was terrified she’d be met with blank stares when she stepped out of the Bad Avocado costume on The Masked Singer.

While those worst fears weren’t quite realised, panellists Mel B, Chrissie Swan, Abbie Chatfield and Dave Hughes were left stumped by the clues, with no-one correctly guessing her identity when the late Shane Warne’s youngest child was unmasked on the Channel 10 reality show.

“That’s also kind of why I didn’t want to do the show because I just thought to myself ‘I’m not a celebrity’,” she said.

“This show is like super celebrities and really well-known people.

“I was just kind of like, I’m not the celebrity – my dad is. And I was just so humbled and so thankful that I was even offered an opportunity like this because if it wasn’t for Dad, this opportunity wouldn’t have happened.”

Most social media commentary was positive, with viewers – just like the panellists – genuinely touched by the 21-year-old’s emotional rendition of Coldplay’s Yellow – the song Chris Martin sang at her dad’s State Memorial service.

One posted “this was one of the most beautiful and touching reveals that there had ever been. No way would I have ever guessed who it was, but it was right up there as a highlight moment for me. Perfectly done, Summer. Perfect.”

Others played directly into Summer’s fears debating whether she was entitled to be called a “celebrity”.

“It’s very sweet to see her pay tribute to her dad, but she isn’t a celebrity. How would the judges guess her. So does that mean children of passed celebrities can all go on masked singer?,” one wrote.

Another fan posted online: “If the point of this show was for the judges to guess who is under the mask then how were they ever going to guess this one? Summer is not really in the public eye and NO-ONE would have known that it is her singing.”

Warne has faced constant online criticism, but says she’s always game to hit back and she thanks her late father for that feistiness.

“Dad was always trolled,” she said.

“Everyone had a word to say about him but it never really got to him, unless it was to do with us three kids. Or to do with his family.

“I’ve got dad’s fire and I’m a bit of a hothead.

“But hey if someone does say a bad thing (about my performance), I’m not really fussed because I went out there and I had fun.

“When life gives you avocados, you make guacamole.”

Summer’s always taken a humorous route such as calling out trolls and their comments on TikTok. She said the constant analysis of her clothes and her body is exhausting.

“If I’m being honest it does get to me sometimes,” Warne said.

“They have a lot to say about my breasts. There was a time where I would go out in public on a Friday or Saturday night with my friends and if I had a little bit of cleavage showing or something, I’d be anxious, you know ‘Are they going to say bad things? Can I not do this.

And it’s literally just the female body, I can’t help how I look.

“Who are they to body shame me? I’m just a 21-year-old girl whose dad was really good at what he did so therefore I am in the public eye.

“But I never asked for this life and it’s unfair for people to judge me when they’ve got no idea who I even am.”

Summer was so liberated by the opportunity to perform on stage anonymously, she’s hoping for further opportunities.

“My favourite part was just singing my heart out and no-one knowing who I was,” she said.

“It was such a euphoric feeling.

“Now, I’ve had a little taste of this industry, I’m kind of like ‘OK, what’s the next part? Let’s keep going’.

“There’s no plans locked in so far. I’m just waiting to see where this will take me.”

Warne was the third celebrity to be revealed on The Masked Singer this season, with 90s Beverly Hills 90210 heart throb Brian Austin Green unmasked in week one, and Ten’s veteran newsreader Sandra Sully revealed in week two.
