Slow start for 10’s new local news show

Channel 10’s relaunched local news service with Kate Freebairn, Max Burford and Tiff Warne has had a shocker start. See the ratings.

Channel 10’s relaunched local news service with Kate Freebairn, Max Burford and Tiff Warne got off to a slow start on Monday night.

Only 15,000 viewers tuned in to see Adelaide’s 5pm weekday bulletin back with a fully local team and news – albeit with Freebairn presenting from Sydney. This is down from an average of 22,000 last week when Jennifer Keyte helmed a combined Melbourne/Adelaide broadcast from the Victorian capital.

Seven’s new weekday duo of Rosanna Mangiarelli and Will Goodings – who took over this year when the doyenne of news Jane Doyle retired after 33 years in the chair – have solidified their stranglehold on the local ratings averaging 118,000 at 6pm. While Nine’s longstanding team of Kate Collins and Brenton Ragless drew an average of 78,000 on Monday night.

The team pulled out the big guns for its first night back with SA Premier Peter Malinauskas cooking a barbie in his own backyard for weather presenter Warne.

A Ten spokeperson said local stories were “at the heart of 10 News First”.

“The network prides itself on journalism that matters to people, and that’s exactly what 10 News First will continue to deliver in Adelaide every night at 5pm.”

Ten announced in November Freebairn would return as newsreader – while presenting from Sydney where she now lives with her partner, PointsBet founder Nick Fahey, and their 10-month-old daughter Airlie – with Burford as sports presenter and Tiffany Warne on weather duties.

The news came two years after the network axed their local service and long-term newsreader Rebecca Morse and Will Goodings’ jobs. There was an instant reaction when Ten announced it as part of a nationwide shake-up, with viewers taking to social media to vent their frustration and indicate they’d get their news elsewhere.

There was minimal fanfare on social media on the posts announcing Freebairn’s return.

“We can’t wait to get our local team of presenters back together this week,” she posted.

“You’ll still get in-depth coverage of what’s happening across Adelaide and analysis of all the big issues, but you’ll notice a new fresh and fun approach to news that we hope you’ll love.”
