Hot on the heels of its new release date, the first official movie stills from the $50m Mortal Kombat reboot have been released ahead of an eagerly anticipated trailer.

The Warner Bros Hollywood blockbuster was shot at locations around South Australia over four months, finishing in December 2019.

Five SA companies were involved in the production, more than 600 locals worked as crew and 1500 extras had a little shot at stardom.

Before the pandemic struck, the action movie, based on the popular video game series, was slated to hit cinemas last Friday. Its release date has now been changed to April 15.

That’s when it will simultaneously hit screens in cinemas and on streaming service HBO Max.

Predicted to inject $70m into the state, Mortal Kombat was filmed at Port Adelaide, the Adelaide CBD, Coober Pedy and Leigh Creek.

Ahead of the shoot, an open casting call through Adelaide’s Heesom Casting attracted thousands of hopefuls to the South Australian Film Corporation’s studios at Glenside.

Editing and other post-production work on the movie continued in SA during 2020.

Starring alongside lead actors including Josh Lawson, Lewis Tan and Jessica McNamee is Adelaide schoolgirl Matilda Kimber, who was chosen for a key role.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid said the producers were particularly thrilled to find her in SA.
