A musical version of the teen movie classic Cruel Intentions is coming to Adelaide this year.
Based on the cult 1999 film, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, the Australian stage adaptation will arrive at Her Majesty’s Theatre on September 8.
The off-Broadway show has been staged in the US since 2015, and features a soundtrack of ’90s hits from artists such as Britney Spears, No Doubt, Christina Aguilera, NSYNC and The Verve.
The production kicks off in Melbourne in May and will continue in Sydney and Brisbane before coming to Adelaide.
The Australian show is still being cast, with actors Tom Dray and Kahli Williams among those vying for a coveted role.
Written for the stage by Roger Kumble – who wrote and directed the original movie – Cruel Intentions the film was a modern-day telling of the 1782 French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
It follows Manhattan-based step-siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil who find themselves “entangled in a web of secrets and temptation”.
Producer David Venn, who brought The Wedding Singer musical to Adelaide last year, said you don’t need to be a fan of the original movie to fall in love with the stage show.
“Cruel Intentions is the ultimate night out. Whether you’re a fan of the movie, or just like iconic music, you’ll find something to love in this devilishly fun, new high-octane production,” he said.
