Sum 41 cancel entire final Australian tour due to illness

The legendary rockers announced the shock cancellation of their entire run of final Australian tour dates with just hours to spare.

Canadian rock band Sum 41 have announced that they have cancelled their entire Australian tour.

Due to Deryck Whibley’s latest bout of pneumonia, the music legends are being forced to miss the three-city Good Things festival, due to kick off in Melbourne on Friday, December 6, followed by dates in Sydney and a tour-closer Sunday in Brisbane.

It will come as a huge blow to the band’s fans, who were excited to see the group on what they had touted as their final-ever tour dates in Australia.

The band shared their heartbreak in a statement to fans on Thursday morning on social media.

“It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce our 2024 Australian tour is unable to proceed. We were beyond excited to deliver this tour from December 4 – December 12, and connect with our Aussie fans once more,” said the band.

“Now that we’re here though, and under the guidance and direction of multiple Australian doctors, it’s clear that Deryck is too unwell to perform. We understand and appreciate your disappointment – we’re gutted too.”

The statement continued: “The good news is Good Things Festival is still going ahead in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane this weekend with an incredible line-up of local and international acts. We can’t be there, but get along for us and have the best time.

Ticket buyers for our Tour of the setting Sum sideshow will be receiving refund information from the ticketing agencies shortly.”

The cancellation comes after Sum 41 cancelled its Good Things sideshow Wednesday night, at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, citing illness.

There had been hopes the rest of the tour dates would go ahead, but their latest statement has confirmed the worst for fans.

Strangely, it’s now the second time this has happened Down Under. Aussie fans also missed out in 2011 when the band missed their slot at the Soundwave music festival after Whibley was hospitalised with pneumonia.

In a statement, Good Things organisers confirmed that the rest of the festival would still be going ahead.

“Sum 41 are gutted they can’t perform, and we fully understand and appreciate fans’ disappointment. Deryck’s health and wellbeing is the focus and priority though, and we hope you will join us in sending him well wishes for his recovery.”

“The good news is our headliner Korn is ready and raring to go, the sites are built, venues look amazing and our timetable has been shuffled to ensure you have the best day possible,” added organisers.
