Canadian rock band Sum 41 have shocked fans today with the announcement that they’re splitting up after 27 years together.

The punk-rockers, led by frontman Deryck Whibley, have released seven studio albums across their career, with five of them landing in the Australian top 40.

They originally formed in 1996, signed an international record deal in 1999, and dropped their aptly-titled debut album All Killer No Filler in 2001.

But in a statement released to social media today, the group shared that they’ve decided to call it a day.

The break-up is not instant, though, with the band – whose biggest Australian hit single was 2001’s In Too Deep – promising that they’ll close out their time together with one last studio album and a final worldwide tour.

“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first,” the band’s statement reads.

“Sum 41 will be disbanding. We will still be finishing all of our current upcoming tour dates this year, and we’re looking forward to releasing our final album ‘Heaven: x: Hell’, along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them.”

“For now, we look forward to seeing all of you skumfuks on the road and are excited for what the future will bring for each of us. Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41.”

Fans flocked to the post to express their sadness that the punk-rock pioneers would soon be no more.

“Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41.”

“Day: ruined,” wrote one, while another begged the band to confirm that this was all a late April Fool’s prank.

“This is heartbreaking, but I just cant help to feel grateful for everything you guys have given us through Sum 41. You have given me the soundtrack to my life since I was 9,” read one heartfelt comment.

“Thank for shaping an entire genre. WE LOVE YOU FOREVER!!”

Outside of Sum 41, frontman Whibley is perhaps best-known for his four-year marriage to fellow Canadian musician Avril Lavigne. The pair split in 2010.

Whibley also battled alcohol addiction for years, eventually getting sober after his alcoholism almost killed him in 2014.

“The doctors said I was lucky to be alive and that there was still a chance I could die,” he said in a 2015 interview.

“Mentally, I don’t even want to drink again anyway. If I literally hadn’t done it to death, I might feel like I’ll be missing something, but I’m not missing anything. I’m done with it. I’ve definitely had enough and it’s not even really that fun.”
