MIX 102.3 management has confirmed top-rating breakfast duo Mark Soderstrom and Erin Phillips will be back on air from Monday, April 19.
The Erin & Soda show has been absent since March 25, initially because Soderstrom was “unwell” – despite continuing to present sport on Seven News.
Management then announced the pair were being given a “well-deserved” break, which is highly unusual during a ratings period.
But it turns out you can still be a winner in the ratings battle that is breakfast radio even when your top talent is off-air.
In the second survey results for 2021, Mix is again the No 1 FM show in the crucial timeslot.
This is despite Soderstrom’s mysterious “illness” and he and Phillips being on holidays for a week.
In fact, Mix has even more brekky listeners, securing 12.0 share points after a solid gain of 1.1 after recording 10.9 in the first survey of the year.
Overall, ABC Adelaide presenter Ali Clarke is still in top spot with 15.4, up 0.2, while FIVEaa duo David Penberthy and Will Goodings are in second place with 13.5, after a 1.3 loss.
With Mix ranking third overall behind the two AM stations, fourth place went to Nova 919’s Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton: Their impressive 1.9 gain – the biggest in the timeslot – took them to 9.8 and also made Ben & Liam Adelaide’s second-favourite FM brekky program.
In the first survey that position was held by SAFM’s breakfast show – hosted by Rebecca Morse, Andrew “Cosi” Costello and Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann.
However, the trio now find themselves in seventh spot overall, with Triple M and Cruise 1323 placing fifth and sixth.
Mix is still Adelaide’s No. 1 station with 13.5 share points, thanks to a 0.5 gain, but Cruise and Nova have both finished ahead of ABC Adelaide.
Aunty and Cruise were equal second on 10.8 last survey. But now easy-listening Cruise — Mix’s sister station on the AM band — has gained 0.4 to finish runner-up with 11.2, followed by Nova (10.9), Aunty (10.5) and FIVEaa (9.7).
Chief content officer for Australian Radio Network, which owns Mix and Cruise, Duncan Campbell said: “To have both the number one and number two stations in Adelaide - with Mix 102.3 and CRUISE1323 - and the number one FM Breakfast with Erin & Soda is a fantastic result for ARN. It’s excellent to see Mix consistently delivering, this is the eighth consecutive time the station has taken out the number one spot and we are still seeing growth.”
The effect of radio veteran Jeremy Cordeaux’s controversial comments and his subsequent sacking from FIVEaa last month will not be apparent until the next survey.
His final shift was on March 28, just days before the ratings period ended on April 3. FIVEaa’s overall result for weekends – when Cordeaux’s shows were broadcast in the mornings – dropped just 0.3.
