There’s no way anyone is going to step on these lads’ blue suede shoes because they are jumping for joy after landing the part of Young Elvis.
Adelaide’s Harrison Thomas, 13, and Nemanja Ilic, nine, will both portray The King of Rock and Roll as a youngster – alternating in the role – in Elvis: A Musical Revolution, which is coming to Her Majesty’s Theatre from April 3.
Rob Mallett is starring as the central character in the musical that spans The King’s rise to fame to his legendary ’68 Comeback Special and is authorised by Elvis Presley Enterprises, which manages the late superstar’s licensing deals.
Harrison and Nemanja won the part of Young Elvis after a local talent search was launched.
Harrison, who studied the comeback special to prepare for his audition, said being cast was “a once in a lifetime thing”.
Nemanja, who fell in love with musical theatre after seeing a production of Disney’s Aladdin, dreams of being on Broadway.
“It’s really cool to say that I’ve started my career at nine,” he said.
When asked to name his favourite Elvis song, Nemanja said it was a tie between Blue Suede Shoes and Jailhouse Rock.
A fan of the “faster paced” Burning Love and Hound Dog, Harrison said he was looking forward to visiting Sydney to meet the rest of the cast before rehearsals begin in Adelaide.
“I’m just really excited for anyone to come see the show,” he said, adding: “It’s great. You
won’t want to miss it.”
Produced by David Venn, Elvis: A Musical Revolution was penned by David Abbinanti and Sean Cercone, who worked on stage versions of Saturday Night Fever and Ghost.
