Adelaide is going to be all shook up when Elvis enters the building.
Elvis: A Musical Revolution is coming to Her Majesty’s Theatre from April 3 as part of a national tour.
It stars Rob Mallett as The King of Rock and Roll, but in the lead-up there will be a local talent search to cast the “Young Elvis” for the Adelaide run.
Spanning The King’s rise to fame to his legendary ’68 Comeback Special, the warts-and-all musical has been authorised by Elvis Presley Enterprises, which is responsible for managing the late superstar’s licensing deals.
Mallett, 32, wasn’t alive when Presley died from a heart attack at age 42 in 1977, but knows him to be a “phenomenal cultural icon”.
While Mallett is considered a triple threat – who can act, sing and dance – he admits mastering those “Elvis the Pelvis” gyrations required some coaching.
And that is where an Elvis tribute artist Mark Andrew Tabone – the husband of Lisa Curry – stepped in.
“(Choreographer) Michael Ralph used him as a consultant to get really specific on the moves,” Mallett said. ‘The fans remember every details so we had to get it right.”
Produced by David Venn, the musical was penned by David Abbinanti and Sean Cercone, who have also worked on stage adaptations of Saturday Night Fever and Ghost.
