There’s been a major shake-up to Channel 7 Adelaide’s sports department, with a former Adelaide United star taking over the top job.

Robert Cornthwaite, who played 139 matches for the Reds and eight for the Socceroos, is the station’s new head of sport, succeeding popular presenter Tom Wilson.

Wilson, who started at 7NEWS in 2007, has been named the network’s national cricket reporter, and will continue presenting sport on their 4pm weekday bulletin in Adelaide.

He’ll also fill-in on their weekend 6pm news over the summer, with Mark Soderstrom continuing as weekday sports presenter.

Wilson said the most recent cricket season, followed by Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka, had “reignited” his love of reporting.

“Writing and storytelling is the best part of the job and am thrilled to be doing it every day again,” said the former Fox Sports presenter.

Wilson said his good mate Cornthwaite was already “thriving” in his new producer role after six years at Channel 7.

“Robbie’s proven himself as a gun producer and leader, with tremendous contacts across the sporting landscape. It’s been great for both us,” he said.

7NEWS Adelaide news director Mark Mooney said Wilson had done an “incredible” job as the station’s head of sport but he was looking forward to spending more time on the road.

“Tom is one of the most passionate and polished sports reporters in the country and adds even more experience to our on-air team,” he said.

“Robbie is already flourishing in his new role of Head of Sport for 7NEWS Adelaide. He’s well connected, extremely hardworking and a respected leader.

“This is a really exciting new chapter for Adelaide’s leading news team.”
