MAFS bride Selin reveals reason for her ‘horrible’ treatment of Anthony

MAFS bride Selin was slammed for her “belittling” behaviour on last night’s episode - now she’s revealed what really happened.

Married At First Sight bride Selin Mengu has defended herself amid backlash over her “horrible” treatment of her TV husband on Monday night’s episode, explaining she was “a bottle of wine in” during the scenes that aired.

The 32-year-old mother-of-one found herself at the centre of criticism for her behaviour toward her partner Anthony Cincotta, whom she repeatedly said wasn’t acting like “a man” after he bailed on their honeymoon on Thursday night because he felt she was “belittling” him off-camera.

Anthony, 38, tried to make amends with Selin at the dinner party in Monday night’s episode. She ultimately rejected his heartfelt apology, after earlier attempting to turn the cast against him. The fallout was swift, with some viewers demanding she be taken off-screen.

Speaking on Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa this morning, Selin claimed viewers only see “1 per cent” of what actually happens during filming, while admitting she certainly could’ve “drew a line in the sand” during Anthony’s heartfelt apology.

“I just think the viewers have got to understand they see 1 per cent of everything that has happened. That’s 1 per cent of everything,” she said.

Selin added: “It was definitely a double decker bus that I threw him under. It was not nice. People were asking me what happened and I don’t think it’s a bad thing to say what happened.

“And unfortunately, I did try to have these conversations with Anthony prior (to) the dinner party, and I actually sat next to him. I don’t know if you’ve seen, but I sit next to him at the dinner party before we go on to the table, and I tried to talk to him and I got brushed off.

“So when it comes to the end of the night and I was you know, maybe a bottle of wine in unfortunately at that point, I didn’t want to listen. And yes, I could have drew a line in the sand.”

Despite hitting it off on their wedding day, Selin raised eyebrows in the episodes afterwards when she appeared unmoved by Anthony’s chivalrous acts, which included carrying her suitcase, opening doors for her and running her a bath.

Co-host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald pointed out during the interview that she had appeared to be “getting quite upset” by Anthony’s gentleman acts.

“No, I totally appreciate that. It’s not a problem. I just said I wasn’t used to it,” she argued.

Selin was slammed by viewers for her treatment of Anthony.

“I didn’t mind it at all. But... when I was doing it he would grab it off my hand, which I thought was being nice, but I was happy to do it by myself as well.

“I was more than happy and appreciative of the things that he was doing. It was just, to me, not consistent. And a lot of things was in front of a lot of people as well.”

Selin also admitted to not feeling attracted to Anthony initially, but that she was open to exploring a connection.

“Look, when I first saw Anthony, no, it wasn’t like that (attraction),” she said. “For me it’s about personality. And I wanted to get to know him. So I didn’t make a judgment from seeing him.

“But we did connect. We had, you know, children and stuff like that. So there was aspects that we did connect that I wanted to know him.”
