Hollywood star Dev Patel is back in Adelaide with his actress girlfriend Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and he could be staying in his adopted hometown for several months.
The Oscar-nominated actor had finished two weeks hotel quarantine when he joined Adelaide-born Cobham-Hervey at Frewville Foodland for some grocery shopping this week ahead of Easter.
A “starstruck” fan spotted Patel pushing a trolley full of items inside the supermarket and later stopped him for a chat in the carpark.
“He’s so lovely and down-to-earth, very gentle and gracious with his time,” the fan told The Advertiser.
“I told him he was amazing in Slumdog Millionaire and was robbed of the Oscar, and he said he wished ‘I was on the voting panel’.
“He was very accommodating and so was Tilda. She was sweet and quiet and they were so loving towards each other.”
The fan said Patel - who recently completed work on his directorial debut, Monkey Man, in Indonesia - was impressed with the way Adelaide has handled the COVID-19 pandemic and told her he’s planning to spend the next “five months” in SA.
“He said we’ve done amazingly well with the virus, we’ve got everything under control. He said ‘You’ll be seeing a lot of me’,” she said.
The worldwide rights for Patel’s revenge thriller Monkey Man, which he co-wrote with Paul Angunawela and his Hotel Mumbai collaborator John Collee, has been picked up by Netflix for a reported $30m.
Patel and Cobham-Hervey started dating in 2016 after meeting on the set of SA-made terror drama Hotel Mumbai.
A late addition to the cast after another Adelaide actress, Teresa Palmer, dropped out, Cobham-Hervey showed Patel around the city and love blossomed.
The rising star most recently featured as late singer Helen Reddy in the Stan biopic, I Am Woman.
