For a well-educated and seemingly intelligent woman, Bianca Censori is making an idiot of herself.
If I had a husband who told me to drop all my clothes in public, I’d ditch him – and spare the world a sight it never needs to see.
But in this twisted era of oversharing where being famous is the only aim, the 30-year-old Australian architect appears to be the latest sucker.
Some have suggested she’s a victim of coercive control by her rapper husband Kanye West.
So when West says jump, she asks how high – or in this case, when he says drop it, she dumps the fur coat and makes a spectacle of herself.
Who would know, but one thing is certain – wearing a stocking disguised as a dress to the Grammys is purely about shock value.
West has admitted as much, bragging on social media that Censori is now the most googled woman on the planet.
Take that Kim Kardashian.
As all manner of experts, including lip-readers and body language decoders, opine about the relationship between West and Censori, can we just take a moment to talk about clothing.
It can be rather useful.
From protecting the body against the elements to displaying personal style, clothing can also enhance sensuality by drawing attention to features of the human shape.
Going starkers leaves nothing to the imagination, and it takes zero effort.
In our society, it’s also rude, unless of course you’re in your own home where you can do what you like.
French fashion icon Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel once said: “I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny. And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”
Did Censori look pretty this week when she dropped the fur?
Who would know, because all eyes were on her body.
The Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammys, has not publicly shared the dress code for the awards ceremony.
But in 2013 when TV network CBS was broadcasting the event, a “wardrobe advisory” emerged.
In a memo leaked to the Deadline (Hollywood) website, CBS requested that “buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered”.
“Bare flesh under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack”, seen through sheer garments, was discouraged, and genitals were required to be “adequately covered so that there is no visible ‘puffy’ bare skin exposure”.
Good grief. Imagine a network even considering such a dress code in pre-social media times.
Bianca Censori felt entitled to dismiss it. Her family in Melbourne must be so proud.
The Japanese didn’t think much of this week’s stunt, that’s for sure. Having lived in Japan, I am not surprised. Modesty is a virtue there.
West now may have lost a $32m contract to perform in Tokyo this May, with a source telling the Daily Mail he “greatly misjudged the tolerance of the Japanese people” and the stunt was “creepy beyond belief”.
This is not the first time Censori, who holds a masters in architecture from the University of Melbourne, has bared (almost) all in public.
At Paris Fashion Week in 2024 she wore nothing but sheer tights and a fur bolero.
That same year she wore a see-through raincoat, with nothing underneath, to a Los Angeles restaurant, giving patrons an eyeful.
In September 2023, police in Venice investigated the couple over “acts contrary to public decency” after they posted pics of a trip on a water taxi when West’s pants were down and his bottom was exposed while Censori’s head was in his lap.
Charming.
Since the pair’s wedding in December 2022, reports have been circulating about West’s influence over Censori, that he not only tells her how to dress but also what to eat. I’m guessing not very much would be the directive for both.
Who knows what is really going on in that relationship? And you might say, who cares, but when we are visually assaulted by unexpected nudity, including on online platforms accessed by children, it warrants discussion.
At what point is enough enough?
If Censori and West cannot keep private what deserves to be kept private, they should be banned from red carpets.
