He’s the acclaimed actor of mega movie franchises from Lord Of The Rings to The Matrix – and now Hugo Weaving will star in an exciting new Aussie drama.
Production has just begun in Melbourne on the six-part series Love Me – based on the popular Swedish series, Alska Mig and will screen on Binge. Filming will run for eight-weeks, under strict Covid protocols, in the CBD and Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs.
Weaving, in his first Aussie TV role for many years, joins Bojana Novakovic (Instinct, Shameless, Satisfaction), Bob Morley (The 100), Heather Mitchell (The Unusual Suspects, Upright), Sarah Peirse (Stateless, Sweet Tooth), Celia Pacquola (Rosehaven, The Beautiful Lie), William Lodder (Wakefield), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty), and Mitzi Ruhlmann (The Code).
It’s a story about modern love experienced by different family members at three distinct times of life and will be directed by Emma Freeman (Stateless, Secret City, Glitch) with lead writer Alison Bell (The Letdown).
BINGE executive director Alison Hurbert-Burns fell in love with the beautiful series when was at a TV content market in London pre-Covid and was swept away by the clip. She knew it needed to be made, and Australian audiences were crying out for a huge beautiful love story done differently.
“Love Me is a story full of heart, grounded by compelling and relatable characters that Australians will fall in love with,” she said.
“We are thrilled cameras have begun rolling in Melbourne on this beautifully scripted drama. Love Me continues our passion for bringing Australians the very best entertainment in the world.”
Hubert-Burns is thrilled to be bringing home some amazing talent. Novakovic and Morley have been based in The States for many years.
It’s also the first drama to enter production for Warner Brothers in Australia.
“It’s bold storytelling we feel will cut through with audiences, being equal parts uplifting, funny and real,” Warner Bros. International Television Australia managing director Michael Brooks said. “With our phenomenal cast and brilliant creative team, we cannot wait for everyone to enjoy it.”
The series, commissioned by the Foxtel Group, will be produced by Warner Bros. International Television Australia in association with Aquarius Films and has principal production funding from Screen Australia and Film Victoria.
“As Australia’s home of high-end television, Melbourne is the natural location for this new Foxtel Group production,” Film Victoria CEO Caroline Pitcher said. “Like Love Me, our city is also full of heart, soul and social connectedness, and Victorians Alison Bell and Emma Freeman will gain creative inspiration from this as they work with our expert crew and screen businesses to bring these modern love stories to life.”
