Former radio host Ali Clarke and husband, Crows AFLW coach Matthew, invest in Prohibition Liquor Co.

The Adelaide media identity has announced a shock new career move just over two months after stepping away from breakfast radio.

Ali Clarke has revealed she’s bought a stake in South Australian gin company Prohibition Liquor Co., as she contemplates a career outside of breakfast radio.

The former Mix 102.3 presenter and her husband, Crows AFLW coach Matthew Clarke, have joined the award-winning business as investors and strategic advisers.

Clarke will serve on the company’s newly-formed advisory board and will also consult on PR, media strategy, marketing, and business development.

“For me, working within a small business is something new,” she said.

“So to be able to do it whilst exploring other opportunities is perfect and after spending 25 years in radio, I think I can bring value to them in building their brand and customer base.”

It comes after the popular media personality announced in late November she had decided to step away from her breakfast radio program following her breast cancer diagnosis last year.

“I miss radio a heap, but I’m not going to lie... the mornings at home waking up the kids or even going for a swim or row have been life changing,” Clarke said.

But Clarke said her new role was just a part-time gig and she’s still looking for a full-time job.

“I’ve been approached with offers from people who are keen for me to work with them so I’m taking time to make sure whatever I do is best fit for me and them, and starting with Prohibition was a no-brainer,” she said.

“It’s allowing me to breathe, so my next move is the right move.”

Clarke and her husband Matthew are close friends with Prohibition’s co-founders Adam Carpenter and partner Kate.

The news comes after Prohibition announced last week that they are looking to raise up to $3m in a crowd-funding campaign to underpin an expansion to a historic 147-year-old distillery at Seppeltsfield.

Prohibition makes South Australian gins, such as the Chihuly gin launched in collaboration with the Chihuly glass exhibition currently on show at the Adelaide Botanic Garden, an Adelaide Festival gin and a Field Blend Shiraz gin made with South Australian grapes.

Mr Carpenter said the old distillery was adjacent to the Seppeltsfield winery and would allow the company’s cellar door, hospitality and production operations to expand from its current Adelaide headquarters.

Mother-of-three Clarke said she wanted to make sure Prohibition remained in South Australian hands going forward.

“A lot of Australians don’t realise this but big foreign owned companies are circling our most loved liquor companies and gobbling them up,” she said.

“I don’t want this to happen to Prohibition. They are already so successful, they don’t need a foreign investment to expand. That’s why we’ve also come on as investors as well as advisers.

“I, for one, have always loved backing in the little guy if it means a better product and better experience and more fun for everyone.”
