Cosi purchased drinks at Coopers Alehouse in Adelaide Airport

When Cosi aired his shock at paying $42 for two drinks over social media his post went viral. Now we reveal where he bought them and why they were so expensive.

Cost on the exorbitant cost of two drinks at SA hospo venue

Media man Andrew “Cosi” Costello was right to think 42 bucks is a bit rich for two drinks, but there’s a reason beverage prices at the airport are sky high.

The host of South Aussie with Cosi couldn’t keep quiet when he shouted his wife a big pour of wine and himself a pint of beer.

While he didn’t “name and shame” the venue, he shared his outrage with South Aussie with Cosi’s close to 132,000 followers on Instagram.

“A rose and a pint was $42.50 at a bar tonight,” he wrote adding: “You gotta feel for bars competing with wage increases, product increases and taxes. But $42.50????? I just told my wife drink slowly cause there’s no second round !!!.”

A close look at the photo showed it was taken at Coopers Alehouse at Adelaide Airport, which is owned by Delaware North.

Cosi bought a 250ml pour of Serafino Rose for $24 and a 570ml imperial pint of Coopers Pacific Pale Ale for $18.50, adding up to $42.50.

The exact same beer - a 570ml imperial print of Coopers Pacific Pale Ale - costs $14.40 at The Original Coopers Alehouse on the corner of Pulteney and Carrington streets in the city, which is independently owned. You can also buy a 425ml Adelaide pint of Coopers Pale Ale - a favourite of regular patrons - for $9.90, at the CBD watering hole.

While Serafino Rose isn’t on the drinks list, a 250ml pour of Hugh Hamilton’s The Floozie rose is $16.90.

When The Advertiser popped into Coopers Alehouse at Adelaide Airport, we met Brad and Riley Brown who were enjoying a drink before heading to Bali for their honeymoon.

The couple, who tied the knot in February, had bought a 425ml Adelaide pint of Coopers Pale Ale for $15.50 and a vodka and soda for $15.

Both agreed $30.50 was a “bit rough” and “expensive” for two drinks, but reasoned it was because they were paying airport prices.

They were referring to what is a universal truth: When you’re in an airport you’re unable to leave and shop around, meaning there is reduced competition, and airport rents are known to be high – which all leads to more expensive food and drinks, including alcohol beverages.

An Adelaide Airport spokesperson told The Advertiser that Cosi’s patronage at the bar was welcome.

“We really do appreciate Cosi as a customer of one of our retailers,” they said, adding: “The hospitality sector is seeking to manage the tightrope challenge of taking on significant increases in costs while still providing value to consumers who are experiencing a disposable income squeeze.”

Australian Hotels Association SA chief executive Anna Moeller has also previously told The Advertiser the general increased costs of alcoholic beverages was due to rises in alcohol excise duty rates and wine equalisation taxes.

The Advertiser has contacted Delaware North, which owns Coopers Alehouse at Adelaide Airport, for comment.
