STAR Wars and Indiana Jones creator George Lucas used the forks when he sat down to eat noodles and drink a Diet Coke at an Adelaide food hall yesterday.

The film director, who sold his Lucasfilm company to Disney for $US4 billion in 2012, was in town while his wife, Chicago businesswoman and Dreamworks Animation chair Mellody Hobson, addressed a superannuation conference at the Convention Centre.

Lucas and Hobson, 46, last visited Australia two years ago when the filmmaker was researching an undisclosed project in Sydney.

It is not known whether Lucas is also doing any film-related work during their stay in Adelaide.

Local film industry sources said they were unaware of Lucas’s visit.

Hobson is president of the $14 billion Ariel Investments group, one of the largest African American-owned fund management businesses in the US, which also opened an office in Sydney last year.

Lucas was photographed leaving the InterContinental Hotel, adjacent to the Convention Centre where his wife was speaking, at lunchtime. He was holding a copy of The Advertiser.

He was later spotted eating noodles and drinking a Diet Coke alone at the David Jones food court off Rundle Mall.

In 2012, Lucas sold his company Lucasfilm for more than $4 billion to the Walt Disney Company, giving it the rights to make further Star Wars and Indiana Jones films.

The first of the new Star Wars movies, The Force Awakens, opened in December and is currently only the third film in history to pass $US2 billion at the box office.

However, after it was released Lucas caused controversy by criticising the new directors and producers for making “a retro movie”.

He also made a comment — which he later disavowed and apologised for — that he had sold his characters to “white slavers” at Disney.

A fifth Indiana Jones movie was announced overnight — it will be released in 2019.

Adelaide DJ Ian Bell and fellow autograph collector Michael Warren were waiting at the InterContinental Hotel to try to meet singer Tom Jones, who performed in Adelaide on Tuesday night, but they had heard Lucas might also be in town.

“We went down to try and get Tom this morning but he gave us the slip and went out the back way,’’ Mr Bell said.

“Then we thought we’d hang around and see what happens.’’

Mr Bell said that Mr Lucas chuckled when Mr Warren had trouble using his camera, “but didn’t really talk to us’’.

“It was quite an extra bonus — very exciting in the scheme of things,’’ Mr Bell said.

Ms Hobson gave the 500-strong superannuation conference audience an insight into her relationship with Lucas, sharing an anecdote from when they were dating during the peak of the Global Financial Crisis in 2009.

“We are down 500 points in the market, it’s 4am in the morning and global markets are just getting crushed and I am breathing hard. And I talked to my now husband on the phone, who was living in San Francisco.

“And he said, ‘You know Mellody, what do you know when you are from Chicago that very few people know?’

“I had no idea.

“He said, ‘What do you have in Chicago ... you have snowstorms. When you are in a snowstorm, what do you know? You never look up at the storm, you only watch your feet because if you look at the storm, you fall. If you watch your feet, you get from one place to the other’.”

She said the advice helped her motivate her staff to take it one step at a time during periods of adversity.
