SA tourism hotspot Kangaroo Island has landed the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2019 Swimsuit Issue, the first time the state has been showcased on the front of the iconic magazine.
The South Australian Tourism Commission has hailed the cover, featuring US model Camille Kostek as a major coup and expects it will boost international visitor numbers to KI.
“Securing a cover of such an iconic publication is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one of our prized tourism destinations on the global stage,” says SATC chief executive Rodney Harrex.
A spokesman for the SATC declined to elaborate on details of their partnership with Sports Illustrated – which has a global readership of more than 70 million – citing commercial-in-confidence.
“However it can be noted that the SATC covered on-ground costs with much of the investment going to local operators,” the spokesman says.
Kangaroo Island was one of three locations used for covers in this year’s swimsuit edition, joining the Bahamas and St Lucia.
Australia has previously featured twice on the cover, in 1985 in WA and in 2012 in NSW. Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson was also famously photographed at KI’s Seal Bay for the 1985 issue.
This year’s KI photoshoot starred six US-born models including Camille – the girlfriend of retired NFL star Rob Gronkowski and Olivia Culpo in locations such as Stokes Bay, Emu Bay, Pennington Bay, King George Beach and Remarkable Rocks.
