South Australia’s impressive record on MasterChef looks set to continue with three contestants among this season’s top 24.
Adelaide’s Ben Trobbiani, Mandy Hall and Huda Al Sultan each secured a coveted apron on Ten’s reality cooking show on Monday night, and will be hoping to emulate fellow South Aussie Sashi Cheliah, who took out the MasterChef crown in 2018.
“I guess there’s a little bit of added pressure coming from SA,” laughs Ben, who works part-time as a pharmacist.
“Every year we do pretty well (on the show)... we’re a little state but we’re one of the better ones when it comes to food and produce so hopefully the three of us can represent that.”
Ben was coming to the end of a five-month backpacking holiday in Asia last year when he finally got up the “courage” to apply for the popular cooking series. “On a rainy day in Vietnam I just typed up my application and sent it through,” he says.
“Everything just lined up perfectly, it was the right time for me and now it’s a dream come true. Health care is a passion of mine but I’m more passionate about food. I like food so much because it gives me a real creative outlet.”
Ben joins stay-at-home mother Mandy and Saudi Arabia-born dietitian Huda as other SA finalists.
