ADELAIDE’S newest reality TV star Hans is facing a social media backlash from US viewers after making it through to the next stage of America’s Got Talent at the expense of local favourites.
Wunderkind Hans — aka Adelaide Confidential’s Matt Gilbertson — became the first Australian to progress to the show’s live finals this week but has since drawn the ire of US fans upset at seeing their beloved performers miss out.
“So many talented people and the guy who can’t sing or dance goes through?” one viewer wrote on Twitter, echoing many responses on social media.
Several fans were especially displeased to see the exit of five-year-old US singer Sophie Fatu, who performed Frank Sinatra’s classic New York, New York.
“I would replace Hans (no disrespect but I don’t think that’s talent) with Sophie! That 5 year old has such composure and what a voice!,” one user wrote.
But Fringe favourite Hans dismissed the criticism as part and parcel of being on reality TV.
“At this point in the show, people become very attached to their favourite performers,” he told The Advertiser from London, where he is currently touring.
“Luckily, I’m starting to assemble a very loyal army of supporters out there who I know will help me sail through when the public vote starts.”
