JESINTA Franklin has opted for an ancient stomach binding method to recover from pregnancy.

The model wife of Sydney Swans AFL star Buddy Franklin has shared her story of trying Bengkung Belly Binding, which originates from Malaysian and Indian traditional healing practices up to 5000 years ago. She was introduced to the practice by her doula, Addison.

“There are so many changes that take place during pregnancy for a woman,” Franklin wrote in a post on her app titled The Traditional Art of Postpartum Belly Binding.

“The growth of our bellies and breasts are visually obvious to everyone yet the internal changes taking place to accommodate the growth of a little human are the ones not commonly spoken about. Our abdominal muscles separate, our uterus grows, skin and muscles stretch, our cervix dilates and our hips and pelvis move … just to name a few.”

The practice requires a woman to use a 12 to 15 metre long piece of organic natural cotton muslin. The material is wrapped around the abdomen and ribcage as soon after childbirth as possible and is worn for around 40 days or longer.

Franklin, 28, gave birth to daughter Tullulah on February 25.

“Despite what most people think, your body doesn’t automatically go back to how it was prior to falling pregnant,” she explained.

“Depending on how you deliver, some women can still look pregnant in the weeks and months following birth, it takes time for a woman’s body to heal and for her organs to return to where they were before baby.”

Franklin warned that she could only “talk to my experience” but that she knows it is important to support your body as the stretched muscles, shrinking uterus and pelvic floor closes.

“To be clear, this practice has nothing to do with aesthetics for me,” she wrote. “It is not about trying to get my stomach ‘back’ or draw my waist in. This is purely about supporting my body in the process of healing post-birth. I did so much work with my phsyio in the lead up to giving birth, preparing my pelvic floor and all the supporting muscles to give myself the best chance for an efficient labour and natural birth, so it only made sense to put in the same amount of time and care into nurturing and supporting my body in the journey afterwards.”
