St Kilda’s eerie mangroves are the scene of a new South Australian movie which has all the makings of a cult horror classic.
The Groves, by trio of filmmakers Dion Cavallaro, Paul Thomas and Cain Harrip, is expected to premiere later this year and now a trailer for the menacing feature film has been released.
“The Groves is an Australian horror film. A young couple visit an old mangrove trail and realise that something menacing is lurking within,” says Cavallaro, of Munno Para West, who along with Thomas and Harrip run Freeze Frame Pictures.
“And then once they’re in there things start to take a turn and they start to face some horrific situations.”
About 20 actors and production staff were involved in the 40-minute feature, which was shot entirely in Adelaide and mostly around the St Kilda mangroves.
Cavallaro says the trio have been movie buffs since they were boys.
“The three of us have been doing it together for about eight years now,” he says.
“Now we’ve gone to a level where we start to really bring more people in and do bigger projects.”
