If music and modelling doesn’t work out for former AFL star Tom Derickx, at least he will have a back-up.
Speaking to Confidential from Bunnings during his lunch break, the ex-Sydney Swans player revealed he’s back on the tools working as a carpenter.
“I did my carpentry apprenticeship before I started playing AFL, and now I’m doing my construction builders certificate,” he said.
“I think there’s a time limit on how long you have to it, so I’m ticking it off now before it gets too late.”

Making his fashion runway debut for David Jones earlier this month, Derickx admits he had butterflies before strutting his stuff.
“I wasn’t nervous leading up to it, but when I was about to walk out I could see the 1500 people on the TV screen so it hit me all of a sudden and I couldn’t feel my legs,” Derickx said.
“Once I was out there, I was fine. I just had to walk and try not to laugh, that was the hardest part. I had a cheeky few smiles.”
And while he is keen to pursue modelling even further, the former footballer says music is his real focus.
“My main passion is Kayex, my band, where I do production and play guitar and sing with my best mate, Palassi Kailis. That’s what I want to be doing.”
Previously linked to model Megan Blake Irwin, Derickx confirms he is currently single but would “welcome love with open arms.”
“There’s nothing to report on the girlfriend front unfortunately — my Mum will be disappointed,” he laughed.
“I don’t check my (Instagram) DMs, I’m too busy, and Tinder is not my thing. I’m not against it, but it’s not for me. I like meeting people the old fashioned ways, like at a bar or on the street.”
Derickx also features in this month’s Mr Jones magazine and will speak tonight at David Jones in conversation event at the Market Street store.
