SAM and Phoebe Burgess are back together, resuming life as a family of four.

Marriage is not for the faint-hearted, the fey or the fickle.

It’s serious business as Phoebe’s parents and Burgess’s mother Julie know.

After spending a large part of his off-season single after moving out of the family home in December following the birth of his second child Billy three weeks earlier, Rabbitohs star Big Sam has returned home to make another go of his marriage.

We hope he does.

We hope he crammed a lifetime of last drinks singledom into his December, January and February, and that he is now ready to be a devoted husband and dad.

At 30, “Slammin’ Sam” can only have a handful of years left as a professional football player.

What comes after — a happy family life you’d hope — he will have to work hard for, probably harder than he’s ever worked for anything in his life.

With his own father deceased and his surrogate father, Russell Crowe, a divorcee and champion bachelor, Burgess will have to look hard and maybe outside rugby league circles
to find a decent role model if it’s marriage and a stable family life he wants.

A stable marriage is not only a strategy for a good rugby league season after all.
