With awards season in full swing, the creme de la creme of Australian film and television have stepped out for The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.
Hollywood actor Chris Pang joined the likes of Deborah Mailman and Essie Davis, who are both nominated for the Best Lead Actress award, as stars hit the red carpet at Sydney’s The Star for the industries biggest night of the year.
Mailman is nominated for her ABC TV show Total Control, while Davis scored a nod for her role in Lambs of God, which is expected to do well at the prestigious ceremony.
The hit Foxtel drama already took home seven categories at Monday’s AACTA luncheon, including best original TV score and best cinematography.
Others nominated for Best Lead Actress in a TV series include Ann Dowd for Lambs of God, Jenna Coleman for The Cry and Anna Torv for Secret City.
For Best Lead Actor in a TV series, Patrick Brammall is nominated for Glitch while Bryan Brown scored a nod for Bloom, Ewen Leslie for The Cry, Sam Reid for Lambs of God and Scott Ryan for Mr Inbetween.
Comedian Shane Jacobson will host the star-studded event.
Stars attending Wednesday’s ceremony, which recognises excellence across film and television, both on and off camera, include Asher Keddie and Jacki Weaver, who are both up for Best Guest or Supporting Actress in a TV drama for their respective shows The Cry and Bloom.
Award presenters include Julia Morris, Joel Creasey, Liana Cornell and Nazeem Hussain.
For film, Best Lead Actor contenders include Timothée Chalamet for The King, Baykali Ganambarr for The Nightingale, Damon Herriman for Judy and Punch, Hotel Mumbai’s Dev Patel and Hugo Weaving for Hearts and Bones.
Teresa Palmer is nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Film for Ride Like A Girl, up against The Nightingale’s Aisling Franciosi, Hotel Mumbai’s Nazanin Boniadi, Top End Wedding’s Miranda Tapsell and Judy & Punch’s Mia Wasikowska.
In the running for the Best Film are Ride Like a Girl, Hotel Mumbai, The Nightingale, Judy & Punch, Top End Wedding and The King.
Channel 10’s ratings juggernaut The Masked Singer is up for Best Entertainment Program, along with Channel 7’s Australia’s Got Talent, Channel 9’s TV shows Australian Ninja Warrior and LEGO Masters Australia as well as the ABC’s Hard Quiz.
Veteran actor Sam Neil will receive this year’s lifetime achievement award, the Longford Lyell Award, which is named after Australian filmmaker Raymond Longford.
It recognises talented people who have demonstrated unwavering long-term commitment to excellence in film and TV.
