Media personality Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello is contesting his “ridiculous” $500 fine for public urination following the St Patrick’s Day horse races in Broken Hill.

The South Aussie with Cosi presenter and hit107 breakfast radio co-host was slapped with the fine by three police officers who allegedly saw Costello and a friend urinate on a tree in a laneway late on the night of March 16.

Costello and his friend, who had earlier attended the races, each copped a $500 fine.

But the popular media personality said he’s “not even sure” he committed the offence and has requested video footage of the incident from police in the small town near the SA-NSW border.

“It’s taking the piss a little bit, pardon the pun … a couple of yobbos pissing on a gumtree, is that worth $1000?” he said.

“It’s unbelieveable that pissing on a gumtree gumtree is worth more than not wearing a seatbelt. It’s ridiculous.

“One of the coppers reckons he’s got video footage of it, which I don’t think he could have got, we were at least 75 metres away from them. So I’ve asked them for that.

“My defence is Broken Hill has been in drought for three years now and I was only trying to assist with breaking the drought.”

The fine for public urination in SA is $250.

A regular visitor to Broken Hill, Costello said his enthusiasm for the town - which is the birthplace of Crows co-captain Taylor Walker - hasn’t been dampened.

“I love Broken Hill,” said Costello, who’s still waiting to hear back from Broken Hill police.
