Channel 7’s Elspeth Hussey and husband Alastair welcome their first child, baby boy named Monty

One of Adelaide’s most popular news presenters has welcomed her first child – a baby boy born three weeks early.

Channel 7's Elspeth Hussey has some exciting news

Channel 7’s Elspeth Hussey just can’t take her eyes off her new baby boy.

The popular newsreader and her husband, Alastair Dillon, welcomed their first child, Monty Michael Dillon, on October 8 – three weeks ahead of schedule.

“We’re completely besotted and can’t stop staring at him. Our hearts and camera rolls are full,” said Hussey.

“Words can’t describe how much I love being a mum. I knew I’d love it, but was unprepared for just how much.

Weighing 2.9kg at birth, Monty’s early arrival surprised the couple, the 7News reporter and presenter told The Advertiser.

“I was booked in for a planned caesarean but my waters broke at home,” she said.

“We’d only had our baby shower on the Saturday and thought we had a couple more weeks to relax and prepare but Monty had other plans.

“I woke up with contractions a couple of days later and he was here a few hours after that.”

Hussey said the new parents chose the name Monty because they wanted something unique.

“We wanted a name that wasn’t in the top 20 but also had been heard before,” she said.

“We’d been calling him Monty for months while I was pregnant.”

Hussey and Dillon tied the knot in January at St Mary’s Church, North Adelaide, almost 20 years after they shared their first kiss.

Soon after their honeymoon on Hamilton Island, they found out they were expecting.

“We were very fortunate that it (becoming pregnant) happened just a couple of weeks after our wedding – it’s just a dream come true,” she said last month.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mum. When I was in my younger years I thought I wanted to have four or 5 (children). Now I think I’d be happy with two.”

Hussey said she has not yet decided how long she will be away from the newsdesk, and will be “playing it by ear”.

“Seven has been amazing... they are happy to have me back whenever I’m ready which has been comforting to know,” she said.
