THERE was something decidedly different about this year’s Oscars red carpet.
While we usually have a dearth of plunging necklines or thigh-high splits to gasp over at a Hollywood awards ceremony, this year the vast majority of women at the Oscars played it very, very safe.
Some may argue it was a little too safe, with some of the starlets looking like a stuffy ancestor from the Victorian era.
Dakota Johnson, we’re looking at you.
Predictably, because Johnson’s frock was created by fashion royalty Gucci, all the commentators oohed at ahh’d at the gown. And yes, it was certainly an interesting departure from her fire engine red dress from the 2015 ceremony (that wouldn’t have been out of place in a scene from her film Fifty Shades of Grey).
Johnson was ever so edgy, using the bustle on the front of her dress instead of at the rear. A move that really would have set the fashion world on fire ... in the 19th century.
Johnson wasn’t the only one who sported a neckline that threatened to creep up over her face and swallow her head.
The colour-palette was quite conservative too. Champagne, nude and beige-tones were the big winners on the evening.
Emma Roberts and Michelle Williams wore strikingly similar styles, living out every actress’s red carpet nightmare. Whether Michelle Williams pulled rank and told Emma Roberts to go and put on a jacket remains to be seen.
It was also the year of the belt-that-didn’t-quite-work-wth-the-frock.
The other talking point of the red carpet was Halle Berry’s hair, that had more volume than a Metallica concert. Reports that she used her hair as an ingenious place to store snacks for the ceremony are unconfirmed.
