King Charles III will be honoured with his own fellowship program to coincide with his first trip to Australia as the monarch.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities has launched the program, inspired by the King’s “life’s work” tackling modern challenges like climate change and inequality.

The fellowship will be offered to mid-career professionals, undergraduates and PhD candidates.

The program is aimed at helping Small Island Developing States (SIDS) including Australia’s neighbouring nations such as Tonga, Kiribati, Nauru, Fiji and Samoa.

The King and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will jet off to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this week.

His Majesty welcomed the program in his honour and said he believed in the “power of education”.

“Throughout my life I have believed in the power of education to improve lives and unite communities across the Commonwealth and beyond,” he said.

“There is so much we can learn from one another as we work together within the Commonwealth to tackle the major challenges of our age and, as these fellowships do in Small Island Developing States, to address them where they are felt most acutely.

“It is my fervent hope that these new fellowships will play a significant role in furthering the free exchange of knowledge and advancing the spirit of mutual support that lies at the heart of our Commonwealth - today, tomorrow and towards a brighter future for all.”

The fellowship will be focused on building climate resilience, education, health and engineering.

It will also work on developing resilient public services by supporting public servants and professionals to grow their skill set and training university academics in important industries.

The program has been established with “a significant personal donation” from the King.
