Axed Adelaide radio presenter Sean Craig Murphy appointed new content director of Fresh FM

Five months after he left the airwaves, a popular radio presenter is making a triumphant comeback to the industry – but with a slight pivot of role.

Veteran Adelaide radio announcer Sean Craig Murphy has made a triumphant return to the industry, five months after he was axed by SAFM.

The longtime presenter has revealed he has taken over as content director at radio station Fresh 92.7.

“I love the coaching talent part of it and helping create exciting on-air ideas with the team,” he said.

“In footy terms, I’m like Matthew Nicks and all the Fresh announcers are like a bunch of Josh Racheles (talented, cheeky and sometimes maverick).

“The whole team at Fresh are so energised and passionate it’s hard not to be excited about the future of content creation when you’re around them.

“It’s definitely a station that punches way above it’s weight so it’s going to be a fun challenge.”

In February, Murphy bid farewell to listeners after 42 years on the airwaves.

The SAFM daytime host was made redundant by the network in a move that “surprised” him and said he planned to explore a career away from radio.

Now Murphy’s heading back to the industry he loves, albeit in an off-air role.

“It feels like a full circle moment in so many ways, I hosted the Monday Fresh Drive show Kaboom in the early 2000s with Mel Greig … so much fun,” he said.

Murphy, 60, has worked on-air at 22 radio stations around the country, after getting his start in 1983 as a teenager at 5MU in Murray Bridge.

Over the years he’s spent time at SAFM, Mix 102.3 and Triple M in Adelaide, Fox FM in Melbourne and 2DayFM in Sydney.

He’s worked a range of on-air shifts including the SAFM breakfast timeslot alongside Adam Hills in the 90s.

He was also previously assistant content director at Triple M back in 2015.

Murphy was honoured with two coveted Australian Commercial Radio & Audio (ACRA) Awards for best music personality in 1992 and 1993.

In 2010, Murphy took over Australian Radio School from David Day, and has helped mentor some of Adelaide’s most popular presenters, from Nova’s Ben Harvey, Liam Stapleton and Andrew Hayes, to Triple M’s Laura O’Callaghan, just to name a few.

There’s plenty of familiar faces at Fresh, including some of Murphy’s former Radio School students, plus his old Mix 102.3 boss George Fiacchi, who is the station’s chairman.

“There’s a famous saying that I love: Creativity has no age limit,” he wrote on social media.

“When you’re really young you don’t know or care about the rules and when you’re older you know when to break and bend them.

“Let’s find out how true that saying is or whether I just made it up.”
