Pop superstar G Flip has urged music lovers to get behind Australia’s struggling festival scene as they plan a very special party in Adelaide next month.
The drummer hitmaker will headline Spin Off at the Adelaide Showgrounds on July 19, a festival by Secret Sounds, the promoter behind Splendour in the Grass. That beloved annual event was cancelled this year.
G Flip, who uses they/them pronouns, was on the bill for Splendour and said they were “stoked” that Spin Off was still going ahead.
“I was once an up-and-comer that played their first festival at Laneway. And then got to play Groovin the Moo and play the early slots and you know, really learn from that experience,” they said.
“So it’s a bit of a hit to the music industry and to up-and-coming artists because you do sometimes get that opportunity and then people get to discover you from that.
“There’s no time like the present to go and see your local favourite artists, go to shows, go buy merch to support your local bands and artists – they need it more than ever.”
The record-breaking musician, who won two ARIA awards last year, will be joined in Adelaide by big names including Norwegian alt-pop singer girl in red, Conan Gray, Peach PRC and The Last Dinner Party.
Flip said Spin Off would be a special night in more ways than one. They and wife, Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause, are planning to tie the knot for a second time in Australia next month – and Flip will host a buck’s show in Adelaide following their performance.
“It just lands on the perfect night for it. Me and my partner have already been married, but we’ve never done an Aussie wedding and we’re going to do an Aussie wedding that weekend. So me and the band and some of my besties will be at Spin Off and then afterwards, I’m gonna see what artists want to come to my bucks in Adelaide,” they said.
“I’m really excited to get to Adelaide and have a bit of a party and a play.”
The couple originally wed in Las Vegas in May 2023, but Flip said they wanted her Australian family to see them exchange vows in person. But don’t expect anything fancy from their second nuptials.
“It won’t be anything big, just in a pub or something. We like it low key, we just want it really easy, no stress, just rock up, don’t even plan what you’re wearing until the day before. That’s the goal,” they said.
The non-binary musician and Stause – who will join the cast of Australian soapie Neighbours in July – have been dating for about two years, and Flip said their shared work ethic helped their relationship work.
“We both understand the grind it takes us to get to where you need to get... like acting in audition after audition. Being a musician. It’s just show after show, it’s a grind until you get somewhere,” they said.
“We both definitely understand each other and it makes everything just easier to be honest.”
