Australia Day celebration EntCent’s first big show back

An Australia Day event is set to be the first major indoor concert in South Australia since the pandemic was declared.

2020: The moments that will restore your faith in humanity

The first large-scale, indoor live music event in South Australia since the start of the pandemic will be held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre as part of Australia Day celebrations.

AusDay in the Arena will feature a Welcome to Country ceremony, a parade honouring multicultural communities and frontline workers, the Australian Girls Choir, a 15-piece modern orchestra and a soon-to-be announced headline act.

The 2½-hour performance will run twice – at 12.30pm and 6.30pm – on January 26. Up to 5000 people will be able to attend each one.

Australia Day Council of SA chief executive Jan Chorley said this year’s theme was “Reflect, Respect and Celebrate – The Story of Us”.

“We have witnessed throughout 2020 Australians demonstrating their resilience as individuals, communities and as a nation,” she said.

“We invite South Australians to reflect on this great land and its people as we embrace the spirit of Australia Day 2021. We reflect and pay respect to our First Nations peoples, we will honour our essential workers who have risked their lives to save ours, and celebrate the diversity of who we are (and) our spirit and endless optimism as we look into the future.”

Other free events include multicultural cooking demonstrations, activities for children and interactive artwork at Adelaide Central Market from January 21-23, from 11am-2pm.

The Gawler Place canopy in Rundle Mall will host a daily program of live music, storytelling and art telling “the story of us” from January 23-26, from 11am- 2pm.

Many councils are also holding community activities.

Mitcham will have a St Marys Park barbecue from 8am. Salisbury will host a breakfast at the Salisbury Civic Plaza from 8.30am.

Unley will have a free sausage sizzle at its Village Green from 9.30am.

Four community breakfasts will be held around the Onkaparinga Council area from 8am, with venues to be announced.

Marion’s Australia Day ceremony will be at Hendrie Street Reserve at Park Holme from 11am. Holdfast Bay Council’s celebrations will be at Jimmy Melrose Park, Glenelg South, from 7.30am.

Bookings are essential for AusDay in the Arena. Tickets will be available from noon on January 13 at australiadaysa.com.au

Pods of fun for Sounds of Summer

By Jessica Galletly

IT is beginning to sound a lot like summer, as SA’s first music festival since the height of COVID-19 kicks off in Bonython Park tonight.

Summer Sounds Festival is a series of concerts throughout January, with artists including Bernard Fanning, Spiderbait, Timmy Trumpet and The Advertiser’s own Hans.

But do not expect a moshpit or lengthy line-ups for drinks.

To make things COVID-friendly, revellers will be required to dance and drink in designated “pods”.
